Authors have long relied on the power of symbolism to guide readers down certain paths. They use this incredibly strong, but subtle force to nudge readers into felling compassion for certain characters, eliciting disdain for others and even for helping with the suspension of disbelief.

Just what is it about symbolism that drives people to feel, respond and act in certain ways?

Symbols have been used by people since the beginning of time to quickly and effectively relay messages, play on emotions and even elicit active responses. Some symbols have long held messages that almost never change. Others are in a constant state of flux, but can prove effective for certain purposes nonetheless.

Just as authors use symbols to drive their stories forward, marketers can also use them to motivate sales, build trust and even turn average products into top sellers. When the right symbols are used on products, on packaging or in advertising campaigns, they can say more than words.

Mastering the art of using symbolism in marketing is not an overnight process. There are secrets to garnering the type of response desired. When the right symbols are displayed in the proper manner, they can drive efforts forward and move consumers to act. The end result can make the work involved in uncovering the secrets very worthwhile.

My post about long tail marketing is just a few days ago. But still I feel the need to explain it more to you about it than just refer you to another site that you may not want to go to.

Long tail marketing primarily deals with retailing online and makes some real interesting points you should consider. The concept is by Chris Anderson and you can get his book at Amazon.

But what does it all mean? It means get busy with keywords and content to get all the searches possible to your site. People do search differently so you must consider all keywords that relate to you.

An example is a hobby site. Imagine the “length of the tail” in how many keywords that could be. Everything from backyards to zebras. It’s the length of the tail when all of those keywords are connected that can bring you more business. Think about a big tail on a huge animal, it covers a lot of ground and gets your attention when connected to an alligator!

So to coin a phrase, “get your tail moving” and leave no rocks unturned. Some search for refrigerators and for some it is an ice box or the fridge. Think about what people name things in other parts of the world that are the same thing in your world.

In keyword research it is easy to spot and grow niches. Low search counts at the top 3 search engines can mean business for you when there is no competition. Use Wordtracker to find out what these less used search engine searches can do for you. So what if there are only 6 searches a month for an item; if you happen to sell that item and no one else does, you want that business.

The long tail of search phrases will build traffic. You can not count on 80% of your traffic coming from 20% of your top used keywords based on readings at Google. Because competition for highly used words is so big, long tail marketing makes perfect sense.

If you are an Adsense publisher, imagine how many more relative ads you could display on all of those new low competition keyword pages. It is the total searches from all of those less used words that make using them worthwhile.

Create your content with a broader base of keywords to see the effect. Watch your site stats and be amazed at all of the new search terms you’ll be found with. Many will tell you more content or more products would be easy to market.

With search engines today it is all about content and keywords, and Google flat out says so in their webmaster guidelines. Long tail marketing is real easy with search engines. All you have to do is know the words people use.

Blogging is a good start to exercise your infopreneuring talent. You can easily test your niche before you really create you serious info product. However, even with that simplest start, you might sometimes find yourself got stuck in building content to lure your potential readers and/or buyers.

3. Definitions

Every hobby, industry, or profession has its own Vocabulary or jargon. That’s often frustrating for outsiders Who wonder what those geeks are talking about. So why not help your readers actually understand what you’re saying by offering definitions on your web site?
Simple definitions can give you a massive competitive edge over competitors with higher search engine rankings. Why? A definition is exactly the type of content that everyday web
searchers are always looking for.

4. Directory Pages

If Someone comes to your website because they are interested in a topic I bet they’d love it if you can send them to other related websites too! Well, wait, why would YOU want to send traffic away? Not exactly?

Directory pages are great for search engines, they get high rankings so make sure to stuff your own adds all around them. Quick way to build content, get great link partners, get search engine optimized and get exposure to your ads!

5. Other People’s Content

You’re having the gang over on Sunday to watch the football game on TV. Which pizza parlor do you call?

Your child needs braces. Which orthodontist does everyone in town go to?

You want to sell your house. Which Realtor do you call?

The answer is the same in each case: the one that has the best brand. Branding is important because it makes sales easier!

Realtors, dentists and restaurants all have brands. So does every small business in the world. Sure, we think that only Fortune 500 companies, like Coca Cola and Procter and Gamble
have brands. But that’s not true. Every company has a brand image. Whether the brand image is good or bad, or if it is well known or invisible is up to you.

If you’re involved in marketing in any way, shape of form, you’ve heard the term “branding” but you probably couldn’t define it. And if Regis asked you “Is that your final answer?”
you’d probably take your money and run rather than risk losing your cash.

That’s because if you asked 50 marketers to define “branding,” you’d get 50 different answers. Very few people agree on what branding is, but they do agree that is important in building
sales and profits.

So what are brands and why are they important to you? Brands make selling easier!

Plain and simple.

To understand branding, we need to understand what branding isn’t.

From my studies and research that includes hundreds of interviews with top marketing managers at large and small companies, I’ve come away with several conclusions:

1. A brand is not a logo, slogan, catchy saying, mission statement or publicity campaign.

2. A brand is about trust. You select a company because you trust them and the companies have credibility. These are two issues that are important to every company of every size.

When you travel along the highway and need a quick meal, do you stop at the local diner for a meal featuring the local cuisine-or do you pull in to McDonald’s because you know the fries are
always going to be the same?

People trust McDonalds. They will give up the chance for an innovative meal in favor of the trusted resource every time!

That’s because people buy on emotion and justify with logic.

“Gee the local diner might be good, but it might take a long time and we’re in a rush.”

Is it any wonder why McDonald’s is a multibillion-dollar enterprise?

Look at the best brands on the Internet: Yahoo, eBay and Amazon. What do they all have in common? People trust them!

In my seminars at Stanford and Berkeley, I always ask if people have bought books from Amazon. Most people raise their hands. I then ask if anyone has ever had a problem with Amazon. In one out of three seminars, one person out of hundreds will raise a
hand. But they quickly say that Amazon resolved the problem in their favor, quickly and courteously.

I then ask if people have telephones. Everyone raises their hands. I ask if people have ever had a problem with their phone company. Most people keep their hands up! You probably have the same experience. Phone companies have bad reputations for customer service.

Good companies create good brands by creating trust.

Do you need a lot of money to create trust?

No way!

Yet hundreds of companies have blown through more than a billion dollars on TV ads during the Super Bowl and other major events trying to build a brand image.

I attended a top-level seminar on branding and a venture capitalist on the panel said a consumer company must spend $50 million dollars to build a brand identity today.

However, in my seminar on branding at Stanford, I asked the participants – all brand managers at major companies, to name 10 search engines, 10 consumer web sites, 3 pet supplies sites and 10 business-to-business web sites.

No one could!

And these are the very people who are in the industry, and are exposed to the millions of dollars of advertising to create brands!

What does this mean?

Buying your way to brand awareness does not work!

The net is littered with those failures: Dr. Koop, Priceline’s grocery service and Boo.com stand out as highly publicized failures.

So, as a small company, you don’t have to worry about not have a treasure chest full of cash to buy a reputation – because it doesn’t work!

How do you create a great brand? That’s where brand assets come in to play. Brand assets are your slogans, advertising, publicity, promotions, characters, spokes people, as well as
your customer service and sales people! These tools help create a meaningful identity that creates an emotional bond with your audience that compels them to take action – and provides the logic that justifies their choices.

The Internet has a treasure chest of tools to create brand awareness, brand identity and brand loyalty including your e-mail address, website name, signature file. You also need to
transmit your own personality and identity to create trust.

When you build trust, you build a great brand. If you can do that, then you will build sales and create customers for life!

What are you doing this summer? What are you doing summer 2006?

I know what I am going to be doing. I’m going to be studying internet marketing. re-studying I.M. basics. Back to basics. Copywriting basics, PPC/AdSense basics, viral marketing basics, and so on. If you stick to basics, there is no way in the world you can go wrong and NOT make $ online.

I have many quality books, ebooks, courses (DVD) that I haven’t studied yet, and doing (not doing) so would make a difference in my online success in 2007.

I’m also going to be following up on several projects I’m currently working on. I’m even going to travel to my team of developers to do that.

So where’s the fun part of summer 2006?

This is the fun part for me. In fact, when I study internet marketing, travel to meet developers, work hard for my online success, I am ‘living’ my dreams in my mind/imagination.

I mean, I’m not studying internet marketing for the sake of internet marketing. I’m studying it for what it will get me. It will make my dreams come true.

Whether you’re promoting an affiliate program or your own product, using pay per click traffic is almost necessary. Wait, let me re-phrase that – pay per click traffic is almost necessary to TEST. Let’s be frank, this form of traffic does NOT work for all niches and businesses.

Also, succeeding with pay per click traffic is not as easy as just putting up an ad and sending
traffic to your main site.

There are lots of elements involved such as your ad, your competition, the landing page, and how much you’re paying.

Obviously, to discuss all these elements, we’d need to write a book – however, this particular
article is going to make you an expert on how to pay less than all your competition and out rank them at the same time.

Google has a unique system of ranking their ads that allows you to be on the top even if you’re
paying the least per click.

How?

Just make sure you have the highest click-through rate on your ad…

There are two main things you need to do to make sure you can get to the top while paying the least.

1. Have a killer start – don’t be cheap, spend the most in the beginning.

2. Consistently test your ads to improve your click through rate.

#1 – Killer Start

One of the biggest mistakes people make when they launch a PPC campaign is that they get
cheap in the beginning and try to start slow.

That’s all wrong.

You need to spend the most in the beginning. Go in with a bang…here are two reasons why.

1. If the strategy just isn’t going to work, find out early and get out – don’t waste
precious time.

2. More importantly, spend the most on PER click in the beginning.

Why? If you spend the most on “per click” in the beginning, that’s the only way you can
convince Google to put you on the top. You have no click through record, so you have to
make up for that by spending more.

By spending the most in the beginning, you’ll get your ad on the front page and get quick
exposure.

This way you’ll quickly build up your click-through record and can immediately start decreasing your “cost per click” without losing your spot.

Now, if you had started with a low cost per click, you’d end up on some page far down, never really get any exposure and could potentially take weeks/months before you build up any kind of click through rate.

So, first lesson, start fast – go in with a higher “per-click” budget. Get in strong and you’ll see the best results.

#2 – Test, Test!

The next best way to increase your ad rankings and decrease your “per-click” costs is to always
test new ads.

Google allows you to run two ads at the same time for the same keywords, they will automatically rotate your ads, one after the other.

This way you can slowly tweak the headlines, the ad, the domain name – everything and find what works best.

Always do this and you’ll slowly see your click through rates increase – as your click through
rises, you can decrease your “cost per click” without losing your spot in the ad.

So, bottom line, even if you’re in a niche with a lot of competition – you can still dominate.

Go in strong, try to get your ad some quick exposure to build a clickthrough rate fast.
Then, quickly start decreasing your per click costs.

Just a quick word of caution, if you use this strategy, make sure to actively monitor your
adwords account. ALSO, make sure you set your daily limit to something you can afford losing.

You’d be surprised how quickly Google can eat up your money!
